In 2011 we launched our Splish Splash Splosh campaign to raise money for a bespoke pool for the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital for Wales. £500,000 later, we are delighted to announce that the hydrotherapy pool is fully operational.

What is hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy is a form of Physiotherapy treatment which takes place in a purpose-built pool that is filled with warm water kept just below body temperature.
What are the benefits of hydrotherapy?
• The natural buoyancy of the water helps to support the child or young person’s body weight, which can relieve pressure on joints, reduce pain and increase movement.
• The warm water helps relax muscles which in turn can ease pain and make the exercise easier.
• Exercise against the resistance of the water helps to improve co-ordination, endurance, muscle strength and balance.
• Hydrotherapy can help improve circulation and reduce swelling.
Did you know….
• The use of hydrotherapy as a way of promoting health and well being , goes back to 4500 BC and was an important treatment in many different cultures around the world
• The size if the hydrotherapy pool at the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital for Wales is almost 2.5 metres wide by 7 meters long and it holds about 20,000 litres of water .The total volume of pool water is cleaned and filtered every hour.
• The hydrotherapy pool in Dolphin area has three depths, ranging from 0.75 to 1.25 meters deep, which makes it useful for children and young people of all ages.
• The water in the hydrotherapy pool takes 3 days to heat up from cold and is tested every day to make sure that the temperature is correct for therapy.
• We have a sensory light and sound system which can be controlled by patients using floating switches within the pool.
